Similarly, its geography of Venice blurs the line between imagination and reality, with locations that don’t exist, sites known throughout the world and tucked-away corners that speak to the authors’ in-depth familiarity with the city and its way of life — I had fun pinpointing the locations on the Map, even if the authors’ use of Italian toponyms in use at the time the novel was written, rather than the names in Venetian, now the only ones in use (for example, San Giovanni e Paolo vs. Zanipolo), was a bit confusing at times…
