VENICE-O-METER 8
Brilliant supernatural and psychological short story / novella set in Venice
(The other stories in the collection are not set in Venice)

I was able to retrace the exact walk that the main characters, Laura and John, take in Venice — that’s actually what led me to launch this site, after thinking about it for months. You can find the walk on this site’s map of Venice. Du Maurier boldly takes her characters off the beaten tourist tracks, with a level of precision that leads me to wonder if she lived here.
As I was reading this collection of stories, I resolved to read every single story du Maurier has ever published — they seem to me far superior to her novels (or rather, the couple of novels by her I’ve read) in terms of psychological insight.
